the voice of Paul and Chris of Elevate by Design

Outdoor spaces in the home are more than just extensions of indoor living; they are vital sanctuaries that enhance well-being and foster a deeper connection with nature. Thoughtfully designed outdoor areas can transform everyday life, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle. These spaces encourage a healthy lifestyle, inviting activities like gardening, outdoor dining and relaxation amidst natural beauty. They also boost property value, showcasing the home’s full potential by integrating functional and aesthetic elements that reflect the homeowner’s style and needs.

Having transformed their lifelong passion for the outdoors and design into a thriving landscape architecture firm that creates breathtaking spaces, Paul and Chris of Elevate by Design understand the profound impact of well-designed outdoor spaces. By creating environments that harmonize with the home’s architecture and the natural landscape, the team at Elevate by Design ensure that each space is both beautiful and purposeful. We sat down with Paul and Chris to explore the world of EBD Studios, where the outdoors becomes an extraordinary canvas for creativity and connection.

How did you discover your passion for landscape and outdoor architecture? What inspired you to pursue it?
  • null
Both of us have always had a love for the outdoors and art/design. We both found our way into the industry through different journeys; however, our reasoning for ending up here is the same: We have a passion for creating inspiring spaces for people to enjoy.

How does artistry play a role in your daily work?
  • null
We are very fortunate to have clientele who allow us a lot of creative freedom. So, we are able to really think outside the box, play with new ideas, challenge the status quo and have fun. Artistry comes on a daily basis with designs, material selections, texture and plant choices, and being able to dream up something special for our clients.

What project are you most proud of and why?
  • null
We are proud of every project that leaves our studio. We take pride in designing for our clients, and not for ourselves. Each project is so unique, and no two projects are the same, even if they have a similar program. However, if I had to pick one, I feel like it would be our Hudson project. The reason is because this was the project that introduced people to EBD in its infancy and the new journey we were embarking on. It was our first published project, and really put us on the map as a real player in the high-end residential design game

How would you describe EBD Studios’ signature style?
  • null
I would say our signature style is creating very functional spaces that are well thought out and match the owners’ tastes. We strip down designs to what is necessary, not overcomplicating or having pieces included that do not need to be there. Less can be more. Our planting style is very monochromatic, such as using masses of the same species to create structure and impact. We always want to marry the architecture of the home to what we do on the outside, so we take a lot of cues from the architecture, the site and the family who plans to enjoy the outdoor spaces. This means we integrate many different “styles” of design and are not stuck to being a one trick pony.

When designing an outdoor space, what is the most important factor to consider and why?
  • null
There are a lot of factors to consider! How the space will be used and the feelings we want to create for the users in that space would be towards the top of the list. How they plan to use the space will really dictate what materiality to use, what type of plants should be incorporated to create a sense of wellbeing or comfort, the ambiance, etc.  It is so important to ask all the questions, and we try to do that on every project.

How do you ensure that your designs harmonize with the natural environment and the architecture of the property?
  • null
Studying the site and the architecture of the house is where we start. Creating harmony isn’t possible if those pieces are not studied, understood and embraced. Using plant material to soften the architecture, or trees to frame certain vignettes. Pulling lines or details off of the home’s architecture to tie into the outside. Sometimes it is the smallest of details and may not even be noticed by those inhabiting the space, but what they do notice is the “feeling” they have when a design is done right. That’s when you know you hit it

What role does technology play in your designs?
  • null
Technology plays an instrumental role. Using 3D technology allows us to really see the space as we create it. It’s also incredibly valuable to the client who can understand our intent and wrap their heads around our vision without having to guess if we are on the right track or not.

How do you stay current with trends and innovations in this space?
  • null
We have always liked to think of ourselves as “trend setters,” not followers. So, we push the limit where we can. Having a pulse on key words clients are using, or styles architects are tapping into on the house are always helpful. Keeping a pulse on other firms we admire and seeing their work can open our minds to new ideas as well and keep us inspired.

How do you collaborate with clients to ensure that your designs align with their lifestyle and preferences?
  • null
It starts with being good listeners. Our goal is to create the perfect space for that particular client. Listening to their wants and needs, taking cues on their style and personality, overall goals, allows us to understand what they are looking to accomplish. Asking the right questions and making sure we understand what they are thinking is very important. Then we throw a little extra flavor in there to make it one of a kind!

To what or to whom do you attribute your success?
  • null
We attribute our success to continually doing what’s right, following our hearts, and the passion to create a company that was our own. It may have been a different idea at the time, but we stayed true to ourselves, worked hard and had fun. Support from friends and family when we decided to take the leap to start EBD was monumental. And the continued support of our family, friends, clients and industry partners has us completely filled with gratitude.

Where do you find inspiration in your daily life? Do you have any recommended books, podcasts, or publications related to landscape architecture?
  • null
We both are inspired through travel. Being able to immerse ourselves in new environments allows us to expand our vision and really understand how different conditions and climates can guide design direction. Even trips close to home, or getting out into nature can create inspiration if you are present in the space. Instagram and Pinterest are both great places to find awesome inspiration and get the juices flowing when getting into the beginning stages of concept of a design.
